Redding, Shasta County
Shasta Dam, about ten miles north of Redding, was completed in 1945 and stands 602 feet high. Behind it lies Shasta Lake, the largest reservoir in California, with long arms reaching up the Sacramento, McCloud and Pit river canyons. Redding grew up as a railroad town in the 1870s and serves as the main commercial center for the far north of the state.
